“Serious” mental illness is typically thought to include, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, borderline personality disorder.

Suicide claims the lives of a significant number of people with serious mental illness:
– one in ten people suffering from schizophrenia will commit suicide.
– one in five people suffering from bipolar disorder will commit suicide.
