For Impact…investing in recovery
People may wonder why we use the language, “for impact.”
Yes, we are a 501(c)(3) organization and, yes, we are non-profit.
But in our experience, people don’t give money to a cause
just because they’re looking for a tax break. They give to
organizations with a mission they believe in and, more importantly,
the means to get it done. In a sense, they are making an
investment in an endeavor which they believe will impact
a problem they care about.
Laurel House is not in business to raise money. We exist to help people recover the things they lost when they became mentally ill: a job, a home, self-respect and dignity…the hope of a future life worth living. That is our mission and we are asking you to help us get it done—to have an impact.
When you give money to Laurel House, you are investing in recovery.
Here are some of the investment opportunities that exist
for you at Laurel House:
Annual Campaign
The annual campaign is another way of saying, “We need money
to have an impact—every year.” Proceeds from the annual campaign
go to the general operating budget and are employed on a
discretionary basis, not to increase our capital assets or
build a large reserve, but to serve more members, develop
new programs, extend our outreach and train and retain our
most effective staff. Each new campaign begins in the fall
with an appeal letter from the Board of Directors, with follow-up
mailings in winter and spring. The annual campaign is our
organization’s lifeblood. You can make a contribution to
this year’s campaign by clicking
here, or by
sending a check or credit card authorization with the insert
in the next mailing you receive. If you can make only one
investment in Laurel House per year, we need you to make
it here. To subscribe to our mailing list, click

address.
William R. Battey Scholarship Fund
The William R. Battery Scholarship Fund was established in
2005 to support the continuing educational needs of the Laurel
House community. Named in honor of a founding Director, the
William R. Battey Scholarship Fund will help pay the tuition
and related educational costs of any member and selected
staff who wish to pursue post-secondary educational goals.
An annual payout rate of 4% will enable Laurel House to pay
up to 100% of tuition and related costs for members and 75%
of costs for a limited number of staff once the endowment
is fully funded at $400,000. For more information about the
Scholarship Fund and how to contribute, please click
here.
Building Endowment
In 2008, Laurel House will establish an endowment to help
defray the costs of upkeep and maintenance on the three buildings
it owns. The endowment will be fully funded at $750,000.
Special Events
Every year Laurel House holds three or four major events
to celebrate the accomplishments of its members and bring
Laurel House’s efforts to the public eye. Some of these events
raise money for the organization. But they are really more
about raising public awareness and strengthening ties with
the community. The annual Move-A-Long at Cove Island Beach
and the Employment-Education Luncheon have been staples of
the Laurel House tradition since 1989. In the last year,
Laurel House has focused on events with mass appeal, such
as a recent screening of the award-winning film Canvas and
silent auction, officiated by the film’s co-stars, Marcia
Gay Harden and Joe Pantoliano. Upcoming new events for Laurel
House will include an art show and auction, featuring side-by-side
works from Laurel House members and professional artists,
scheduled for spring 2009, and a gala dinner the following
fall to celebrate our 25th anniversary. Please contact the
Laurel House Development
Office if you are interested in opportunities for corporate
scholarship or volunteering to help organize or work at one
our events.
Charitable Remainder Trusts
(CRT’s) & Planned Giving
You can enjoy the tax benefits of a charitable contribution
to Laurel House, while continuing to receive income from
your gift in the form of an annuity or other financial instrument.
An employee of the Laurel House Development Office would
be happy to meet with you about opportunities for planned
giving through a Charitable Remainder Trust, but we strongly
recommend you speak with an attorney or qualified financial
advisor first.
We like to know our supporters…
