Invest in recovery...
Laurel House was founded in 1984, with
money from Connecticut’s Department of Mental Health (now DMHAS).
Total charitable contributions that year amounted to $750 and
nearly all of Laurel House’s funding came from the state. By
2000, the Board of Director’s annual
appeal brought in
an additional $92,000 a year, enabling us to develop innovative
new programming outside of our commitments to state government.
In 2007, private investment in Laurel House from foundations,
corporations, churches and individuals totaled more than $200,000
and the goal is growing higher every year.
Over the years, DMHAS funding of Laurel House has steadily
declined, from nearly 100% of the annual operating budget
at the outset, to slightly more than 50% by 2007. The early
reliance on government funding from the state has shifted
in recent years to a more self-sufficient mix of income streams,
including a thrift store, supportive housing apartment rentals,
federal grants and charitable investment.
Government funding for social service programs is by no means
on the rise. If Laurel House is to flourish and serve more
people with better services, it must begin to raise more
money from private sources. The five-year strategic
plan calls
for Laurel House to raise more than one-third of its annual
operating budget from charitable investment by the year 2012.
That’s more than ONE-MILLION DOLLARS, which will enable us
to…
- serve 35% more members
- have greater
geographic reach and provide more services to people in surrounding
communities of Norwalk, Greenwich, Darien, New Canaan, Westport,
Weston and Wilton
- add 5 new program staff positions
- develop stronger programs in the
areas of wellness, outreach, double recovery (dual diagnosis),
young adult outreach, and social recreation.
- strengthen our
administrative core
- enhance our information systems
- explore the potential for creating
a statewide center for recovery training and clubhouse excellence
To accomplish these ambitious goals,
Laurel House must look beyond the government funding which
helped it to get started and develop a program of sustainable
investment from private individuals, corporations, churches
and foundations. To do this, we will have to take an annual
appeal that a decade
ago averaged less than $10,000 a year and make it a cornerstone
of the Laurel House budget at $750,000 a year or more. We will
also need to increase income from special
events more than
tenfold, from less than $50,000 a year in 2007 to $500,000
a year by 2012.
Laurel House has a plan to bring hope into the lives of hundreds
of people recovering from the effects of serious mental illness.
We need your help to make it happen. Please consider making
an investment in recovery now.

Director’s Annual Appeal: Every
October-November, the Laurel House Board of Directors makes
its annual appeal to friends and supporters. More than $100,000

new programming that exceeds our contractual commitments
to the state. The list of regular contributors to the appeal
include Laurel House Directors, their friends and associates,
families of members, churches, corporations and concerned
individuals.
Capital Campaign & Building
Fund: Since 1998, Laurel House
has raised more than $2.1-million for the purchase and renovation
of a new clubhouse building and construction of four new apartments
in our residential building at 6 Washington Court. Four-hundred
thousand dollars remains to be raised to pay off the debt for
these two major building projects.
Thrift Store: Annual
sales of $200,000 from our Thrift Store in Stamford support
our human service programs. Click
here for more information about the store
and how to make a donation.
Volunteers: Laurel
House depends on the voluntary participation of its members
to operate, but we also need community volunteers with skills
in specific areas, such as information technologies, communications,
advocacy and public relations. Major holidays, such as Christmas
and Thanksgiving, offer many volunteering opportunities.
We are also grateful for the dedicated volunteers who serve
on our Board of Directors and subcommittees.
