Position Title : Supported Education / Employment Counselor
Department Unit : Employment and Education
Reports to : Manager, Supported Employmnet & Education 

Essential Functions:

The Supported Education/Employment Counselor supports people in mental health recovery to: enroll in, attend and successfully complete GED, post-secondary educational and vocational programs; help clients find, get and keep competitive employment of their choice, using proven evidence-based practice.


The Supported Education/Employment Counselor provides support to program participants who are pursuing educational and employment goals, including assistance to establish reasonable goals and objectives related to their pursuit of post-secondary education and/or employment.

  • Assist participants who are attending or would like to attend colleges, universities or technical schools in the area, including help with the admissions process, applications for financial assistance, tutoring and mentoring arrangements, transportation, and all other issues and activities related to education.
  • Respond to education-related queries in a timely fashion.
  • Facilitate vocational counseling and career exploration for people in recovery.
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of goal plans related to education and employment.
  • Develop job placement opportunities appropriate to individual needs of participants.
  • Work with employers and prospective employers in the community to develop job opportunities.
  • Provide training and support on the job and on campus as required; collaborate with Bureau of Rehabilitation Services for individual participants as needed.
  • Help enhance participant skills related to his/her employment goal, including resume/cover letter writing, interview preparation and job searching skills.
  • Maintain communication with other providers on the individual’s support team, including clinicians, case managers, care coordinators, educational representatives and employers.
  • Maintain records required by best practices and produce reports as assigned.
  • Meet with clients in community settings (e.g. on campus, coffee shop, library, to facilitate access.
  • Participate in or facilitate skills workshops (e.g. communication skills, job search) as required.
