Fairfield County Community Foundation awards $20,000 to Laurel House, Inc. Supported Employment program helps people coping with mental illness to secure and retain competitive jobs.
Years ago, Bob worked in the financial world in NYC. Because of the stress from his mental illness, he saw himself as a person who would never be able work again. With the help of his Laurel House employment specialist, Bob realized that he was interested in becoming a security guard. In Connecticut, this requires certification. Bob signed up for the next class and passed with flying colors. He was immediately hired as a security officer and is enjoying many assignments at financial institutions throughout Stamford.
Bob continues to inspire others to pursue their employment goals and reintegrate into our community. Last year, Laurel House provided employment support for 142 individuals with 118 employed in independent and supported jobs.
“At Laurel House, our mission is to assist those living with mental illness to achieve recovery” said Linda M. Autore, President and CEO of Laurel House. “With proper care and treatment, between 70 and 90% of individuals with mental illness experience a significant reduction of symptoms and an improved quality of life. Many of our program participants are engaged in a process to reduce the worst effects of their illness while following normal life pursuits such as education, employment and social relationships.”
The Fairfield County Community Foundation promotes the growth of community and regional philanthropy to improve the quality of life throughout Fairfield County. Individuals, families, corporations and organizations can establish charitable funds and contribute to existing funds. The Foundations provides philanthropic advisory services, and develops and leads initiatives to tackle critical community issues.
